Coach Description

The purpose of a coach in the BHBL is to be an exemplary role model for our children while implementing the main objectives of the BHBL, which are:

  • To inspire our youth,
  • To teach and practice the ideals of good sportsmanship, character, teamwork and fair play,
  • To develop Double Goal Coaches,
  • To teach the game of basketball and emphasize fundamentals and team achievement,
  • To provide a means for parents and adults to participate and interact with children, and
  • To recognize that the welfare of the children will always remain first and foremost and free of adult glory.
As a coach in the BHBL, you have the unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the children who participate in our program.

As a coach in the BHBL, we ask that you attend only two mandatory meetings during the season.  Our Introductory Coaches meeting and our Positive Coaching Clinic.  BOTH these meeting are mandatory for ALL Coach and Assistant Coaches.  Please go to the "Important Dates" link on the website for the day and time of these mandatory meeting.
  
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
All coaches (head and assistant) are responsible for the following:

1. HAVE FUN !
2. BE POSITIVE !
3. Attend our mandatory coaches meeting prior to the start of the season.
4. Attend our mandatory positive coaching clinic given prior to the start of the season.
5. Complete a coach's application.
6. Arrange for a team administrator to help you coordinate the various activities during the season.
7. Conduct a team meeting to:
    a. introduce the coaches, the administrator, the players and the families to each other;
    b. explain the philosophy of the BHBL;
    c. distribute the uniforms, the game schedule, the practice schedule, the team roster, the    snack schedule and any other materials to the members of the team;
    d. review the playing rules and procedures with everyone.
8. Know and follow the playing rules and procedures for your division and the league in general.
9. Communicate with the division directors or the Commissioner in the event you have any questions or issues throughout the season.
10. Be responsible for your conduct, the conduct of your players and spectators at all times and at all BHBL facilities. The BHBL will not tolerate any form of unsportsmanlike conduct.
11. Live by the ZERO TOLERANCE rule for poor sportsmanship and unsportsmanlike conduct.
12. Never argue with the referees or the scorekeepers.

Please always remember that the BHBL is about creating a positive experience for all of our participants, not just our players. As coaches, you are the most important element in making each season a great experience. Create a positive environment at all times and make the most of this great opportunity.
